Sheet metal gauge converter
Convert sheet metal gauge to millimetres and inches, and millimetres to the nearest gauge, for steel, galvanized, stainless, aluminum (Brown & Sharpe) and British SWG, with the full tables.
Gauge numbers mean a different thickness in every metal. Pick the standard, type a gauge to get millimetres and inches, or type a thickness to get the nearest gauge; the whole table is below for the chart on the wall.

Why gauge is going away
Suppliers outside North America quote millimetres, and laser cutting services price by exact thickness, so drawings should carry the millimetre figure. Gauge survives on old drawings, US catalogues and in the habit of saying "16 gauge" for 1.5 mm steel; this page is for translating those.
